Small Named Northern California PGA
Horton Smith Award Winner

Laird Small, Director of Instruction at the Pebble Beach Golf Academy, has been selected by the Northern California Section of The Professional Golfers’ Association of America as the 1999 recipient of the Horton Smith Trophy.

The Horton Smith Trophy is awarded annually to a PGA member for outstanding and continuing contributions to improving professional training and development opportunities for the PGA Professional.

Small, an eleven-year member of the PGA of America reflects this commitment through his on-going activities in the PGA of America’s Northern California Section. He has been on the planning committee and teaching staff for the NCPGA Player and Teacher Development Forum held annually in Sacramento, CA. Small also serves as a faculty member on the National PGA Specialty Certification Program in the area of teaching.

He is currently serving on the 2000 PGA Teaching and Coaching Summit Task Force and earlier this year hosted a National PGA Teacher and Player Workshop at Pebble Beach. "Laird’s contributions in the area of education are remarkable," states NCPGA President Pat Gould. "It is quite fitting that he be recognized with this years Horton Smith Trophy."

Laird’s accomplishments extend beyond the Association. He is Co-founder and Past President of the AT&T Pebble Beach Junior Golf Association, which currently has over 1200 children participating in the program. He is a supporter of the Boys and Girls Club of the Monterey Peninsula, the Salvation Army Junior Golf Program, and the Good Tidings Foundation.

Small was honored at the Annual Membership Meeting of the NCPGA at Elkhorn Country Club in Stockton, CA. Four hundred fellow professionals were in attendance.
