GOLF TIP
by Denise Boutin"Size Really Does Matter"
I often see students who are using clubs that just dont fit. Whether it
be young children attempting to swing a cut off club from dads old set, a
65" man with standard length clubs or a lady fighting with her equipment that
she purchased at a garage sale; the result is the same, more struggle and less enjoyment.
I guess you might be able to play soccer wearing a pair of sneakers that arent the right size...but wouldnt it be painful, clumsy and potentially dangerous?
Purchasing golf equipment that fits need not be an expensive proposition...in fact in most cases it will save you money over time. Many custom fitted clubs can be purchased one at a time...a new golfer doesnt need a complete set on day one. A 7 wood, 6 iron, 8 iron, pitching and sand wedge make an ideal starter set. Rather than purchasing an inexpensive throw away set...why not spend less money by getting properly fitted clubs you can actually hit. Make an investment you can add to over time. (Ive purchased several junior clubs just so parents can see what a difference smaller, lighter and more flexible clubs can make for a young golfer.)
"Off the rack" clubs should also be fitted. Hitting off a lie board helps determine the lie angle of the club. Having the lie angle adjusted for your swing reduces off-center hits. Now many manufacturers offer shafts of different flex, flex point and weight. Oh yes please, dont forget the grip...it is your only connection with the club. Properly fitted grips can actually improve your ball flight.
What is the best way to determine whether or not your clubs are correct for you? Have them evaluated by a trained club-fitter. Many LPGA and PGA golf professionals in your area have the necessary training to steer you in the right direction. Unfortunately you cant assume that the person giving you lessons or selling you the clubs is a sanctioned professional and/or certified club fitter. So ask. Being an informed consumer will save you time and money and increase your enjoyment of the game.
