"Short & Simple"

When the ball is just far enough from the green, that putting is too risky, why not chip? The ball could be over the green, to the side or short, but you ARE in the "chipping zone". A low, running shot that stops even with the cup (if not in!) should be visualized. The key is your set-up position. Assume a narrow and slightly open stance, the ball position is middle (if your lie is bad move your position more towards the back foot). Position your weight and hands ahead of the ball towards your front foot. The stroke is similar to putting, however your set-up encourages the correct downward blow required to the back of the ball to lift it over the fringe and on to the green. Assist your distance control with proper club selection. When the hole is on the far side of the green away from you, use a 7-iron, middle of the green 9-iron, right in front of you sand wedge. Proper club selection gets the ball to the correct part of the green. Touch and practice gets you "inside the leather." Work on it!
