Playing golf at a tender age of five, and
entering his first tournament at eight, Matt Brown won his first
"Long Drive" contest at the age of seventeen. He set a 9-hole course record 31
in 1983 at Cedar Lakes Golf Course in Ft. Sill, OK, while still in high school, following
with an 18-hole course record 66 one year later. Matt turned professional at the age of
twenty-one and won the Johnny Matthews Pro-Am in Graham, TX, the first tournament he ever
competed in as a professional.
Since 1988, "Downtown" Matt Brown has competed in and won numerous long driving events. His trick shot and long drive exhibitions are recognized at golf tournaments across the country. For the past nine years, Matt has hit the mark with his exhibition gimmicks of providing an entertaining display for special golfing events. Two of his highlights include hitting 200-yard shots off his knees, and hitting a golf ball straight as an arrow with a golf club shaft made of a garden hose. Some other types of clubs he uses include those fashioned from tennis rackets, hinged clubs, fishing rods and baseball bats. He performs his trick golfing for organizations such a hospital benefits, men's clubs, public school systems, junior golf programs and other non-profit golf tournaments.
He has seriously demonstrated his long driving skills by winning the 1997 Hard Drive Power Golf Tour Long Drive Championship in Denver, CO with a drive of 455 yards. He has qualified for, been runner-up and sectional qualifier in, other long drive championships from Arkansas, to Kansas, to Oklahoma and California. He has been a five-time local qualifier for the Remax North American Long Drive Championship.
