Chuck
Cox began his golfing career as a student at the San Diego Golf Academy in 1992,
graduating with an Associate of Applied Business Degree in Golf Complex Operations and
Management. After completing the two year program, he played the Golden State Mini
Tour for about six months. In the summer of 1994, he became a part of the staff at
Kapalua. Not yet an apprentice, he competed the PGA Golf Professional Training
Program (GPTP) in two and a half years, scoring third highest in the country on his test
scores, and receiving a Titleist FootJoy Scholarship. He became a PGA Class A
Professional in 1997.
The highlight of Chuck's career is the opportunity to play a major part in the Mercedes Championships, a PGA TOUR event held annually at Kapalua Golf Club. He has served as a PGA TOUR liaison, was an official starter in 1996, and has assisted in the actual course setup. Through this association Chuck believes it helps him as a teacher. It gives him the chance to watch and learn from the players in order to better relate to his students.
One of Hawaii's top instructors, Chuck teaches private and group lessons, which includes the use of video as well as on course playing. In addition to being a certified Henry-Griffitts Club Fitter, Chuck is more of a playing teacher and course manager rather than the traditional teacher. His philosophy is not to take a student on the course for a playing lesson if he/she cannot even make a basic swing. He gives mostly playing lessons, and believes the fundamentals are important and will address them if needed.
Chuck donates his time to the Kapalua Junior Golf and Mentor programs, which is the biggest junior golf program in Hawaii. Ping irons and Callaway woods are donated biannually to a program called Clubs for Kids.
