James Powers, PGA Golf
Professional
Midway Par 3 Range - Lewes, Delaware
Highly motivated and hard working, James Powers is a well-trained professional in all areas of golf management and operations. With almost fifteen years experience in the golf industry, Jim's experience ranges from assistant golf professional at both Rehoboth Beach Country Club in Rehoboth Beach (DE) and Indian Creek Yacht & Country Club in Kilmarnock (VA), to head golf professional at Sussex Pines Country Club in Georgetown (DE), where he also owned and operated the pro shop.
As a Class A member of the Professional Golfers' Association since 1991, Jim is certified as an Instructor in the Professional Golfers' Sport Psychology Program. This program is designed to help golfers understand their game better, maintain consistency, and create a better balance from tee to green. To complement the sport psychology program, he personally developed a teaching plan where motivation was a key step in getting golfers excited about the game of golf.
Jim created a junior golf program for children, ages five to seventeen, which grew from fifteen children in 1992 to presently over ninety. This junior program gets the parents and grandparents involved in the teaching process. Jim feels "this is the key, if you want your juniors to come out and play. Without the parents and grandparents involvement, the participation numbers stay relatively small." A two week golf camp starts the summer off, the first week for kids ages 5 to 10, and the second for kids ages 11 to 17. The juniors spend two hours working on the range and putting green, participating in classroom instruction, watching videos on the golf swing, etiquette, rules, and pace of play, etc. After the two week camp, the juniors move on to playing the course. They are divided into different groups based on their age and playing abilities. They range from an eighteen-hole group, nine hole group, five-hole group, three-hole group to a first swing group. The parents and grandparents are provided a detailed pamphlet on the junior program, and come out each Monday and act as group leaders and instructors. Goal requirements for the juniors are set in order for them to move up. Jim says "the program works!"
Through his association with the Delaware State Golf Association, Jim planned, coordinated, and directed the Rehoboth Beach Junior Golf Tournament. This event is a scholarship program that is affiliated with Toyota USA and brings PGA TOUR players to the event to speak, most notable Ray Floyd, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Mark O'Meara and others. Jim also teaches golf to juniors through his local YMCA, and volunteers through a continuing education program offered by Delaware Community College.
Jim became a member of the National Honor Society while attending Columbiana High School, and attended Kent State University in 1973, as a Speech major. He also spent many years improving his education through PGA educational programs.
He served in the United States Air Force at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, IL from 1977 to 1985. It was during this time he became a three-time Chanute Air Force Base Club Champion, in addition to finishing in the top four five other times. His playing ability has earned him many titles, including Medallist of the Tri-County Tournament in 1968; 1973 Champion of the Eagle Open, a National Merchandising Corporation Tournament; winner of the 1979 long drive contest at the Bob Hope Air Force Aids Charity Golf Tournament; and 1997 Champion of the Duquoin, IL Invitational.
